The Manitowoc Dry Dock Company, located in the lakeshore community of Manitowoc, Wisconsin, is founded. 


The company changes its name to Manitowoc Shipbuilding Company.


The company begins an endeavor called Manitowoc Equipment Works to build refrigerated display cases.


Manitowoc Equipment Works designs and distributes Sub-Zero upright freezers.


The MagicMatic chest freezer displays and stores frozen food for grocery stores and restaurants.


Manitowoc Shipbuilding Company reorganizes to reflect its diversity, renaming itself The Manitowoc Company, Inc.


Manitowoc begins producing commercial ice-making machines.


After designing a simpler concept that used 50% less energy than other ice machines on the market, the Manitowoc Ice-Mobile crisscrosses the country for 18 months to demonstrate the company’s reliable ice cubers, flakers and dispensers.


McDonald’s purchases its first Manitowoc Ice machines.


Manitowoc Ice becomes the first company in the industry to use an environmentally friendly refrigerant.


Manitowoc begins a joint venture with Hangzhou Household Electric Appliance Industrial Corporation.


Manitowoc Equipment Works is renamed Manitowoc Ice. The company buys SerVend International, a producer of ice and beverage dispensers for quick-service restaurants and convenience stores.


Manitowoc becomes the 100% owner of its former joint venture in China. 


Manitowoc acquires Enodis, adding leading brands on the “hot side” of the foodservice business as a complement to its class-leading “cold side” products. Enodis traces its roots to a small grocery and pharmacy, S&W Berisford, founded in 1851 in Manchester, England.


Manitowoc Foodservice receives its first ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year Award.


The National Restaurant Association (NRA) presents Kitchen Innovation Awards to Merrychef® for its eikon® series ovens and to Multiplex for its Blend-In-Cup® (BIC) smoothie maker.


Manitowoc Ice receives an NRA Kitchen Innovation Award for its Indigo® Series ice machines. 


SEFA Buying Group names Manitowoc Foodservice the Supplier of the Year. Manitowoc Foodservice acquires INDUCS, a leading supplier of induction technology, based in Herisau, Switzerland.


McDonald’s presents Manitowoc Foodservice with a Sustainable Supply Award. Convotherm wins the NRA Good Design Award for its Convotherm 4 oven. Manitowoc Foodservice opens a new manufacturing facility in Monterrey, Mexico, and a sales office in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.


SUBWAY® names Manitowoc Foodservice the Vendor of the Year, and Frymaster receives an NRA Kitchen Innovation Award for its FilterQuick® fryer with Oil Quality Sensor. Manitowoc Foodservice acquires Welbilt, a producer of refrigeration equipment in Thailand. The company also establishes a distribution center in Covington, Tennessee, and transfers production of its Cleveland, Lincoln and Convotherm® product lines from Ohio to three centers of excellence in North America.


Manitowoc Foodservice, Inc., is established following a spin-off from the Manitowoc Company.

Environmentally Friendly Refrigerants

Environmentally Friendly Refrigerants

We use environmentally friendly refrigerants such as R290 in Delfield® and Manitowoc® Ice products. A natural, propane grade refrigerant, R290 is more energy efficient than other refrigerants and can save up to 40% more energy compared with other hydro-fluorocarbon (HFC) refrigerants.

No Hazardous Substances

We restrict the use of hazardous substances such as lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent, polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) and diphenyl ether (PBDE) to reduce our impact on the environment. Our internal policies and procedures ensure we comply with all regional and international policies. We are RoHS2 compliant.

Lifecycle Management

Our commitment to full lifecycle equipment management reduces the impact on the environment. We begin with using fewer raw and more recycled materials for manufacturing, packaging and delivery processes. At the end of equipment life, we help customers recycle and dispose of equipment.

New Kitchen Serves 2,000 People a Day
New Kitchen Serves 2,000 People a Day

Manitowoc Foodservice donated 24 pieces of commercial kitchen equipment including ovens, kettles, ranges, fryers, grills, refrigerators and an ice machine to Metropolitan Ministries in New Port Richey, Florida. The organization serves 2,000 hot meals every day to hungry families and the homeless throughout the county.
Taking the Ice Bucket Challenge
Taking the Ice Bucket Challenge

Hundreds of employees from across the United States participated in the Ice Bucket Challenge to raise money for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. The challenge started at the Manitowoc Ice facility in Wisconsin and traveled throughout 10 other facilities. Hundreds of employees participated in and/or donated to the effort, raising $10,000 in employee and company contributions.
Running the Relay for Life
Running the Relay for Life

Employees from Manitowoc Ice joined other area employees in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, raising over $58,000. Teams held a variety of fundraising events such as flower sales, bake sales, barbecues, raffles, “trap shoots,” rummage sales and silent auctions.
Local Renewable Resources Power Convotherm Plant
Local Renewable Resources Power Convotherm Plant

Our Convotherm plant in Eglfing, Germany, partnered with the community to build a power plant to produce steam from local carbon-neutral crop and dairy farm by-products such as wood chips. The steam powers the manufacturing facility as well as about 50 private households in the area. In addition, the plant uses electricity exclusively from a hydroelectric power plant, requires suppliers to use reusable packaging for raw materials delivered to the facility and purchases eco-labeled paper. Each year, the plant’s efforts save about 1 million kg of C02, 4.6 million kWh of electricity and 270,000 therms of natural gas.

Frymaster developed several innovations for McDonald’s including a low oil volume technology for the Japanese market, a multiple-language touchscreen controller, and a built-in oil quality sensor for fryers in European markets to improve consistency of oil management, reliability, crew safety and ease of use.

Manitowoc Ice® and Merrychef® were recognized for outstanding service and bringing innovations to SUBWAY on a regular basis. Based on conversations with SUBWAY, Merrychef eikon® high-speed ovens with touch screens are designed to exceed expectations in performance, maintenance and ease-of-use. Manitowoc Ice Indigo® series programmable ice machines feature patented Luminice® Growth Inhibitor to keep the food zone clean, saving thousands of dollars each year in labor alone.
